David John Bilinsky

Thoughtful Legal Management

A member of the Law Society of BC since 1981, David has been an influential leader – empowering lawyers to anticipate changes, realize opportunities, face challenges, and embrace the possibilities of applying technology to legal practice in innovative ways that provide service excellence.

As a Practice Management Advisor at the B.C. Law Society for almost two decades he advised lawyers on ethics, practice management, and technology. In addition, through writing, speaking, and volunteerism, Mr. Bilinsky has inspired and supported a generation of lawyers to use technology effectively in their practices.

For over 28 years he has written PracticeTalk for the Canadian Bar Association (CBA) BC Branch, drawing readers to legal technology topics with his signature use of apt song lyrics. He was the long-standing author of the Technology column in the B.C. Trial Lawyers Association magazine and a frequent contributor to the American Bar Association’s (ABA) Law Practice Magazine, serving as its executive editor for two years.

Mr. Bilinsky is also a contributor to the Canadian law blog www.slaw.ca and writes his own blog www.thoughtfullaw.com, a frequent winner and Hall of Fame inductee in the Canadian Law Blog Awards. Moreover, he has written hundreds of published articles and contributed chapters to more than 30 books, including CLEBC’s Annual Review.

Mr. Bilinsky was named one of CLEBC’s Most Prolific Volunteers for 1996-2016. Other volunteer activities include founding and chairing the Pacific Legal Technology Conference to bring cutting-edge legal technology education into B.C. Considered a visionary in how technology and other forces are changing the practice of law and how legal organizations can take advantage of these changes, he has been appointed a Fellow of the College of Law Practice Management, a Fellow of the National Center for Technology and Dispute Resolution at the University of Massachusetts and a member of the Board of The Sports Dispute Resolution Centre of Canada. He is a past Co-Chair of ABA TECHSHOW.

As a prolific presenter around the world on cutting-edge legal technologies, he has raised British Columbia’s profile as a justice system innovator. He is an enthusiastic advocate for the justice sector’s adoption of new technologies, including online dispute resolution and the Provincial Court’s Twitter Town Halls.

Mr. Bilinsky has played an important and unique role in the application of technology in the development of legal practice.
