Roger Chown, P.Eng., LL.B.

Roger practices law in Barrie, Ontario, Canada. Roger received a Bachelor’s with Honours in Applied Science (Mechanical Engineering) from Queen’s University in 1985. He worked as an engineer for 3 years for Ontario Hydro, primarily at the Bruce Nuclear Generating Station. He received his Professional Engineer designation in 1988. Roger went on to law school, graduating with an LL. B. from the University of Windsor in 1991. He articled and worked briefly in Toronto, and then moved to Barrie in 1994 where he joined Kevin Carroll, Q.C. LSM and the late Richard Heyd in practice.

Roger’s practice is focused on insurance defence including bodily injury and property claims, as well as subrogated claims. He does act for plaintiffs in personal injury and property claims as well. He also acts as an umpire in insurance appraisals (property valuation disputes). He also does a variety of other types of litigation including business disputes.

Roger has been an active volunteer for the Advocates’ Society, serving on the Board of Directors from 2008 to 2011, and then as the co-chair of the Personal Injury and Insurance Practice Group from 2013 to 2016. He has been active on numerous task forces for the Advocates’ Society. Since 2018, he has been a director of Canadian Defence Lawyers.

Roger is a frequent speaker on a wide range of topics, but most often on advocacy skills and “legal tech.”
